I am a practicing hospitalist at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, VA. I enjoy educating patients, their families, students, staff, nurses and anyone else who enjoys learning. I am equally fortunate to learn with every patient interaction.
The goal of this website is to provide insight and education into the often baffling world of inpatient medicine in the American Healthcare System.
At this point in my career I’ve had > 50,000 patient encounters at Chippenham. This experience has provided great knowledge. And while knowledge is power; people act/react on emotions. Providers seek to care for those emotions with empathy, compassion, and respect. Yet for patients many other emotions accompany admission to the hospital. Pain, anxiety, uncertainty and fear are just a few. Fear, particularly of the unknown, is common. Insight and setting expectations can lessen that fear. It also provides a starting point for communications with healthcare providers. So often I ask patients if they have any questions and the response is “I don’t know where to start.”
I hope this website gives a little insight to what is going on in the hospital and provides a basis for open two-way communication with your healthcare team. Everyone in the hospital works towards the goal of patient improvement; however; too often even when the entire team is on the same page the patient is not.
I hope a little time reading helps you out. This page is dedicate to you. Those who seek knowledge to better understand and cope with their situation and want to play an actively engaged role with their healthcare team.
I am also the medical director for the Richmond branch of Bristol Hospice. End of life care is rewarding in that the only goal is care and support of the dying and their families. Modern medicine is a tangled web of metrics and regulations which often confound the doctor-patient relationship. Mostly that is stripped away in hospice and I am permitted to practice in a way where my only goal is to make someone feel better that day which is professionally refreshing.
If you want bona fides on me just ask the nurse or another staff member who know me.
Listed below are my professional credentials.
